TS Barry - Parish President Provides Update on Tropical Storm Barry

07/12/2019 06:06 PM

“Based on our final National Weather Service scheduled briefing late this afternoon, it appears Terrebonne Parish will experience tropical storm force winds throughout Saturday, July 13 and into Sunday morning,” said Parish President Gordon Dove. “Fortunately, the National Weather Service does not think at this time that Barry will become a hurricane and that is good news for us,” he said. However, he added that a considerable amount of rain is expected as the storm moves through the parish.  The latest track has the eye of the storm brushing Point au Fer Island which is the westernmost part of Terrebonne Parish.

Residents are urged to report problems to the Emergency Operations Center at (985) 873-6357.  The EOC will be staffed throughout the evening.  President Dove pointed out that, while emergency crews are standing by to remove fallen trees blocking roads and restore power, such services will be suspended if wind and rain conditions make it unsafe to do so.

President Dove also reminded citizens of the parish that a curfew will go into effect at 10:00 PM this evening (Friday) and will extend to 10:00 AM Saturday morning.  Law enforcement will patrol parish roads to enforce the curfew.  “For one thing,” he said, “when conditions get that bad, it will be unsafe for folks to be on the road unless it is absolutely necessary.”

He pointed out that the sandbag operation ceased this evening around 4:30 PM since conditions in the parish had worsened.

President Dove said that all measures to prepare for the approach of the T.S. Barry have been completed.  He reiterated the emergency operations team will continue to monitor the situation throughout the night and inform the public of developments which impact the parish and provide critical information necessary to ensure public safety. “It is important,” he said, “for residents of the parish continue to check the parish and OEP websites, parish Facebook page and Twitter for updates.”  “Just be safe and hunker down, Terrebonne will be fine!”
